Day in the Life: March 2016

I've done a "Day in the Life" post every March for the past four years and it almost didn't happen this year (and obviously didn't get posted til April.)  But, this is a Wednesday at the end of March when I thankfully took good notes because here I am weeks later typing it up.

7:40am- I wake up to Jilly tickling my face (not my favorite way to wake up.)  Bryan has already left for work, and I can hear Mattie talking in her room.  We go down to eat breakfast and watch a bit of the news.  Jilly works on an art project and Mattie tries on her sunnies.

8:30am- We cuddle on couch and watch an episode of Curious George together.

9am- I let the girls watch while Daniel Tiger while I shower and get ready, then the girls come upstairs to get dressed.

10am- Off to Ikea (we go in for 2 things and come out with 6) then to Costco where we shop then eat pizza for lunch.

12:30pm- I drop Jilly off at school, talk to her teacher for a bit, and decide to stop by the library on the way home to pick up a few holds.  There's construction on the freeway and the traffic turns it into a long, frustrating drive during which I eventually give up on the library.

1:20pm- I get home and Mattie is asleep in the backseat.  I put away the Costco stuff, do the breakfast dishes, and sit down to read for a bit.

2:20pm- Mattie wakes up just as a friend drops off her kids for me to watch for a while.

2:40pm-  I load everyone up in the car and pick up Jillian.  When we get home all the kids play together in the playroom.

3:45pm- My friend picks up her kids, I talk to my sister while the girls play in the backyard until...

4:20pm- Tragedy strikes when Jilly cuts her knee.  It bleeds quite a bit and I call Bryan for advice because I'm the biggest baby ever when it comes to blood.   I get up the courage to take a peek at the cut and it's not nearly as big as I thought; I get Jilly settled with a bandaid.

5:04 Bryan arrives home as I'm making sweet potato fries to have with dinner.  He checks out the injury.

5:40 - We eat dinner- a rotisserie chicken from Costco which is the girls' very favorite meal.

6:10 - A game of Old Maid (I lose) then Bryan starts the dishes while I clean up the playroom with the girls.

6:50 - Bryan leaves for a youth activity at church.  I put the girls in the bath and learn how to make bunny napkins thanks to youtube.

7:20 - Girls have pajamas on (or not pajamas in Mattie's case) and hair brushed, we read books and I learn that Jilly has Pinkalicious memorized.

7:50 - Say my last goodnight to girls, come down to finish cleaning the kitchen, make more bunny napkins, iron a few shirts, organize some papers, and watch tv.  Bryan comes home at 9 and we go to bed somewhere around 10:30.

a day in the life

For the past three years I've done a "day in the life" post sometime in March.  Undoubtedly it's incredibly boring for you to read the mundane details of my day, but I think it's fun to look back and see what the heck I did all day and it's become kind of a tradition, so here goes- Friday, March 13th, 2015.

6:30am I hear Mattie chattering away in her room but it's all happy noises so I let her stay there for a while.  At 7 I get her up and go down to watch the Today Show. Bryan leaves at 7:10 and Jilly wakes up and comes down a little bit later.  I ask the girls if they want cereal or a banana muffin for breakfast, they both want cereal.  After eating one bite Mattie says "Wahn cake!"  Cake=Cupcake=Muffin.  So we have cereal and muffins for breakfast.  And, check out Mattie's morning hair.

8:00 I unload the dishwasher, clean up the breakfast dishes, make sandwiches for the girls' lunch and pizza dough for dinner, and mop the floor (my mop is sadly underused so this is a big deal- be impressed.)  Girls play with the little kitchen.

9:15 I let the girls play on my phone while I get ready

10:15 All dressed and hair done!  This is often a traumatic experience involving tears from some or all of us (Jilly hates having her hair brushed and if it were up to Mattie she would wear jammies all day every day) but this day it was pretty smooth.

10:15-12:00 Mommy & Me, Fridays are the BEST because of this program.  We go to the rec center down the street from our house and they fill the gym up with toys.  Kids run wild and the moms sit and chat.

12:30 We go to the library because the previous day some crazy lady accidentally turned in a dvd case without the movie inside (It's a good thing the library doesn't charge me for all the dumb mistakes I make.)  We read some books and Mattie hoards all the farm animals.

1:30 This is the time of day when I swear time speeds up- I never get as much done as I think I will.  Mattie falls asleep on the way home from the library so I carry her up to bed.  I talk to Bryan for a few minutes while he is on lunch break.  I warm up some leftovers for my lunch and share a little bit with Jilly (she already ate her sandwich at Mommy &Me.)  Then I talk to my mom for a little while while Jilly colors.

2:30- Jillian and I read a chapter of Charlotte's Web.  We have a kind of hilarious conversation about Wilbur being killed to make bacon and the fact that we eat animals.  I don't think she's traumatized, but it's never a fun fact to learn.  Sometimes it drives me crazy that Jillian doesn't nap or do quiet time (my fault for not enforcing it, but she is an extremely social child and always hated it) but I also love this afternoon time we get to spend together every day- I know all too soon she'll be off to school and times like these will be rare.

3:00 Jillian watches Curious George.  I read scriptures then do some very important research on what pie I am going to make for Pi Day (chunky monkey banana cream.)  I bribe myself with a handful of chocolate chips to get off the couch and clean up a bit.  Mattie wakes up.

4:00 Off to Target.  Jilly and I both need gifts for friends' birthdays coming up, we need pie ingredients, and I haven't had a drink all week so I decide we deserve some cherry coke to go along with our pizza dinner (grape kool-aid for the under 5 crowd.)  And, yes, the paci needs to go but she's been sick for months and months and I have zero backbone.

5:20 Jillian makes a card for her friend's birthday, I make pizza, and Mattie whines at my feet because she wants me to hold her.  By 6:00 it looks like a tornado has gone through the kitchen and my nerves are shot, but we have a cheese pizza and a bacon & ranch pizza and, most importantly, cherry coke.

6:15 Bryan is home- hooray!!!  We eat pizza + carrot sticks then Bryan reads books to the little ladies while I wage war on my kitchen.

7:00 More books in Mom and Dad's bed, jammies, teeth brushed, and prayers.

8:08 All is quiet upstairs, I make two pies, then Bryan and I eat popcorn while watching The Dark Knight Rises on tv.

A Day in the Life

Around this time in 2013 and 2012 I did a "Day in the Life" post.  So here is the two child version, a day of my life in 2014.  This time I took a picture every hour to document.

My day kind of began at 5:15 when Jilly woke up (ack!)  I brought a variety of books and toys to her in her bed and threatened her NOT to wake up anybody else until we came to get her (at 6.)  Ten minutes later Jilly yelled for me and said she was hungry.  No and more threats.  Ten more minutes later Jilly yelled for me and said she didn't have enough books.  Major threats.  I go back to sleep.  Bryan gets up with both girls at 6 (saint!)

I wake up to find this happy girl, another happy girl getting her daily fix of Dora, and a supervising Dad.  I nurse Mattie, make lunch for Bryan, and check on the world according to facebook, my email, and instagram.

Bowls of cereal + Tap the Magic Tree

Girls play Potato Head together while I clean the kitchen, then the usual routine- Jilly runs upstairs to hide (either in her bed, her tent, or her closet), Mattie and I go up a couple minutes later to search for her, everyone giggles at such a ridiculously fun game.  Girls get dressed, Mattie goes down for a nap.

While I shower and get ready, Jilly does some pages in her alphabet workbook (it will be a sad day when Jilly decides her workbook isn't the coolest thing ever.)  I clean the upstairs bathrooms while Jilly debates what color she wants her nails painted.

Rainbow nails.  Five minutes later I do touch-ups.  Two minutes later Jilly decides she wants all-blue nails so we remove and re-paint.  Mattie wakes up, and I talk to my mom while packing a picnic lunch.

Folsom Zoo with our friends the Shurtz's - so, so fun

Standing up at the park, Not pictured- Jilly's massive tantrum when she stopped to look at something and the rest of us got ahead of her (you're welcome.)

A very rare and much appreciated nap, I carry sleeping Mattie in and lay her in bed, lunch + scriptures for me.

You thought you'd have some quiet time mom?  Haha.  I send a few emails and make some calls in preparation for our next Relief Society activity.

"I ate all my lunch can I have chocolate milk?" are the first words out of her mouth when she wakes up.  We all play together, Jilly begs and begs and begs and begs to watch a show (no!)  Mattie goes down for a nap and stays asleep this time.

A few rounds of Uno, then Jilly helps me make dinner, Bryan gets home, we eat dinner, Mattie wakes up, clean up the kitchen. (No picture during the busy busy 5:00 hour.)

Double riders at the warehouse where all cool families go on Friday night

Big fan of chocolate ice cream

Medicine, jammies, books, prayers, sleepover lasts .25 seconds.  Finally both girls are peacefully sleeping in their own beds.

Somehow this ended up in our cart at Costco so Bryan and I get a good start on the bag and some guacamole while watching a movie.

a day in the life

About a year ago I posted what a day in my life looked like and I thought it would be fun to do again. So this is last Tuesday.

6:30am We hear noises coming from Jillian's room.  Bryan the Good and Brave gets her out of bed and takes her downstairs to play.  I promptly fall back asleep.

7am My alarm goes off.  I go downstairs and to see Bry and Jilly and switch the laundry (that I started the night before.)  I come back upstairs with Jilly, the computer, gogurt, milk, and graham crackers.  Jilly sits on my bed and watches Dora while eating her breakfast.  I get ready for the day and then get Jilly dressed and do her hair as well.

7:50am We're out the door.  I take Jilly over to a friend's house and then I head to the doctor for my glucose test (the test for gestational diabetes; you have to fast for 12 hours then drink this super yucky sugary drink then wait an hour and they take a blood sample.)  It's generally one of the more unpleasant parts of pregnancy, but I really didn't think it was too bad.  I quite enjoyed having time to sit and read sans Jilly.  I read a few articles from the Ensign then Mrs. Mike.

10:15am I leave the office and luckily see a McDonalds on the way home- I am starving.  I go to get Jilly and end up letting her play longer and chatting for a while.

11:15 We leave our friends.  We missed Story Time but still head to the library to return some books, check out new ones, and play on the computers.

12pm Jilly would never let me leave the library without a walk across the parking lot to play at the park and look for "doodle do's."  Jilly swings, slides, and chases after many roosters.

1pm We visit Bryan during his lunch.  The plan was to get Jamba's since they have a deal this month that some flavors are only $2.  But, this Jamba isn't participating in the deal so we go to Plan B- icee's at the gas station.  Jilly also has a banana and some crackers I brought with us in the car.

1:30 Jilly falls asleep as we drive home.  I carry her to bed then straighten up the house since we left in such a rush this morning.  After switching the laundry, loading the dishwasher, and taking out a bag of trash I make a sandwich and read blogs while enjoying my lunch.  My sandwich is so delicious that I make a second and eat it.

2:00 I turn on The Bachelor to watch the first hour that I missed last night and fold laundry.  Then I start to gather and put away my Valentine's decorations.

3:00 Jilly wakes up, and I give her string cheese and some leftover shredded chicken (she often ends up having a snack before naptime and a snack afterward instead of a real lunch, does this happen to anyone else?) I fold one more load of laundry while Jilly plays with the pile of Valentine's decorations and takes some excellent selfy shots with my phone.  I turn on a Disney station on Pandora which naturally leads to Jilly bringing me a "sparkey pincess dress" to wear while she dances.  I finish putting the decorations away, make my bed, and change into some pants (I had been wearing a skirt) and running shoes.

4:00 We drive to a nearby trail and walk to the duck pond, stop to watch for a while, then walk back to the car.

5:15 We get back home, I start making dinner (tacos), and Bryan gets home from work.
5:45 We have dinner then each eat a Girl Scout cookie.

6:00 Bryan and Jilly play while I clean the kitchen (Can we talk about the fact that the actual eating took 15 minutes while the prep and cleaning took altogether an hour? Annoying.)

6:30 We watch Jeopardy (because apparently we're 80 years old) and I fold the last load of laundry then read our new books from the library with Jilly.

7:15 Bath time for Jilly.  Bryan sits with her while I put away the laundry.

7:40 Out of the bath, jammies, more books, brush teeth, prayers, kisses, bed.

8:15 Bryan and I eat a few more cookies (poor little girl doesn't know what she's missing.) I do all the ironing while Bryan works on some stuff on the computer (he's in charge of the website for the local ASCE Group.)

9:00 Done with work for the day!  I read emails and some blogs and start writing this post.

9:30 I get in the shower (One of my Secrets to Happiness I have discovered in the past year is showering at night.  My hair dries overnight and I don't waste 40 minutes blowdrying it anymore, hallelujah!)

10:00 I read Mrs. Mike for a while then we chat, read scriptures, get ready for bed, and go to sleep.

a day in the life

A few weeks ago Janssen posted what a day in her life looks like.  I loved that little glimpse into her day and thought it would be fun to chronicle one of my own.  So, here is last Monday.

7:30 - I kind of wake up as Bryan gets ready and leaves for work; Jilly never sleeps past 7 so I'm enjoying this luxury instead of getting up with Bryan (wife of the year)

8:00 - Jilly wakes up and we eat frozen waffles for breakfast.  I check my email and make a grocery list while Jilly smashes banana all over her high chair.

8:40 - While Jilly plays in the bath I sit next to her and read The Happiness Project.  After she's dry and dressed I get in the shower.  As I get ready she plays with various toys and occasionally brings me a book to read (and by read I mean she flips the pages as I attempt to get a few words in.)  I may or may not let her chew on Bryan's toothbrush.

10:00 - Off to Walmart for a few groceries

10:45 - I put Jilly down for a nap and talk to my mom while I put the groceries away and make cookie dough

11:15 - Jilly is still crying in her bed.  Right then my sister calls so I decide to drive around and talk to my sister and let Jilly fall asleep in the car (this was not a model day for sleeping, things don't go well when we get off our usual routine)

11:45 - Jilly sleeps; I bake cookies, read scriptures, check blogs, unload the dishwasher, research staining wood furniture, and eat lunch.

1:45 - Jilly wakes up and I give her chicken nuggets and yogurt for lunch

2:15 - We drop the cookies off at the church for a funeral luncheon then play at a playground.  Jilly is ecstatic to be outside- we haven't played outside in 6 days because of rain.  On the way home we stop at Ace to get some wood stain.  (At home I realize that Jilly stole some glue and dropped it in my diaper bag, guess we'll be heading back tomorrow to return it.)

3:45 - We play with toys, read books, and dance to Pandora's Toddler Radio.  While Jilly is distracted I send a couple emails.

5:30 - Bryan gets home from work, we all go running around a nearby lake together

6:30 - We warm up leftover soup for dinner

7:00 - Bryan and Jilly build lego towers while I clean the kitchen

7:30 - We have a 5 minute Family Night using the nursery manual (tonight's lesson is "I can take care of my body," but perhaps a lesson on honesty would have been more appropriate.)  Bedtime routine- jammies, brush teeth, read a few books, clean Jilly's room, prayers, kiss goodnight, bed!

8:00 - I sand our new wood shelf while Bryan studies for his upcoming P.E. (professional engineering, not to be confused with physical education) exam. While sanding I listen to Crossed.

9:00 - We watch Alcatraz and eat cookies and milk

10:00 - We watch a few minutes of news, chat, get ready for bed, and go to sleep
